About Mikaela

My name is Mikaela Caron. I graduated from Purdue University in May 2018. I have a full-time job in a different field, but I’ve been learning iOS Development since January 2019. I hope to encourage others to pursue programming and really believe in themselves.

How did you get into tech?

I studied at Purdue University for Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering Technology with a minor in Computer Information Technology and Electrical Engineering Technology. I didn’t exactly study Computer Science, but I did take a few programming classes in C, C#, and Java.

I am 100% self-taught with iOS development and Swift.

I enjoy tech because it affects EVERY industry. There isn’t really an industry nowadays that doesn’t use a computer in some form or another. Being able to apply my skills in virtually every industry is so interesting and unique!

What languages/technologies do you have the most experience in?

After work, I do iOS development with Swift. At my current job I use C# and SQL.

What are you currently learning/practising?

iOS Development. Specifically I’m learning about Unit Testing and building my own app with various Firebase products. (Authentication, Database, and Storage)

What are your favourite resources to learn/stay updated on tech?

iOS Dev Discussions Podcast by Sean Allen (@seanallen_dev)

Swift by Sundell blog

Following various people on Twitter

What would people learn about by following you?

By following me people will learn about various iOS development topics, and learn how to trust their own instincts to unlock their potential. You can do anything as long as you set your mind to it!

What inspired you to start sharing your experiences on social media?

I began on January 1, 2019. I wanted to keep myself accountable. I posted for 100 days. I did my own version of #100DaysOfHustle, where I worked on a project that I cared about for 100 days. This could have been doing one tutorial, or making one design, but it was dedicating time to complete a bigger goal.

How can we get in touch with you?

Instagram or Twitter, DMs are open.

Lightning round

iPhone or Android?

iPhone

Dogs or cats?

Dogs

What’s your favourite ice cream flavour?

Chocolate

What’s the next place you want to travel to?

Maybe Europe somewhere, not exactly sure.

How many hours of sleep do you need to get to feel like yourself?

7

What is your superpower?

Communication. You can be the smartest person in the world, but if you can’t articulate your ideas to others, it doesn’t matter. In college, a majority of my friends weren’t in technical majors. Having to explain what you’re doing to someone who has absolutely no background in your field can be a challenge. Explaining my classes to my friends allowed me to practice this skill.
